100-Year-Old World War II Veteran To Marry Fiance, 96, In Normandy
American couple Harold Terens, 100, and Jeanne Swerlin, 96, are set to tie the knot in France next month, promising a love story that surpasses "Romeo and Juliet." Terens, a US Air Force veteran, will be honored at the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, where he served during World War II.
Their wedding in Carentan-les-Marais holds sentimental value, close to the historic beaches of Normandy. The youthful centenarian is described as cheerful, witty, and possessing a remarkable memory, making him a living history book.
Terens' journey from enlisting at 18 to serving in various locations during the war, including a secret mission in Soviet Ukraine, is nothing short of extraordinary. His life took a new turn when he met Swerlin in 2021, following the loss of his wife Thelma in 2018.
Despite hardships, Terens acknowledges his good fortune and eagerly anticipates his upcoming wedding, surrounded by loved ones. At 100, he considers himself the luckiest person alive, cherishing the love and experiences life has offered him.
