Virginia "Ginger" Hislop's remarkable educational journey came full circle as she returned to Stanford University, 83 years after putting her master's program on hold for love. At 105 years old, she proved that age is no barrier to pursuing one's dreams and achieving academic milestones.

Hislop's educational pursuit began in 1936 at Stanford University School of Education, where she initially pursued a bachelor's degree in education. Graduating in 1940, she then delved into her master's degree program with the goal of becoming a teacher.

However, World War II intervened, prompting Hislop to prioritize her relationship with George Hislop, who was called to serve in the war. Their marriage led her to leave her master's program before completing her final thesis.

Despite leaving Stanford, Hislop's passion for education persisted as she ventured into a successful career in Washington state politics. She served on the Yakima School Board of Directors, played a crucial role in founding Yakima Community College, and contributed significantly to the establishment of Heritage University in Toppenish, Washington.

Recently, Hislop's son-in-law, Doug Jensen, reached out to Stanford, leading to a heartwarming culmination of Hislop's academic journey. With the university dropping the thesis requirement over the years, Hislop already had all the necessary credits to graduate with her master's degree.

On June 16, Hislop proudly donned her cap and gown to receive her master of arts in education, representing the class of 1940 as its sole member. Her momentous graduation was met with a standing ovation from fellow graduates, family members, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the entire Stanford community.

Reflecting on her achievement, Hislop expressed her joy, stating, "My goodness. I've waited a long time for this," encapsulating the enduring spirit of lifelong learning and determination.
