A devastating family tragedy unfolded in Imperatriz, Maranhão, Brazil, as a 13-year-old girl, Evelyn Silva, died just five days after her younger brother, 7-year-old Luis Silva, passed away from suspected poisoning linked to a tainted Easter egg allegedly sent as an act of revenge.
Evelyn died on Monday at Imperatriz Municipal Hospital, where she had been under medical care since Wednesday. According to hospital authorities, her death was caused by vascular shock triggered by multiple organ failure. Despite intensive treatment, her condition deteriorated rapidly and was unresponsive to medical interventions.

The incident began when Evelyn, Luis, and their mother, Miriam Lira, 36, each took a bite from an Easter egg delivered to their home by courier. The chocolate egg was accompanied by a note that read in Portuguese: "With love, to Miriam Lira. Happy Easter!!"
Shortly after consuming the treat, Luis became unresponsive. His father, Rafael Silva, performed CPR before rushing him to the hospital, where he was briefly revived but later died at 4 a.m. on Thursday. Lira, who also ingested the candy, was hospitalized and remains under observation in stable condition. She is expected to be released within the next few days.

Authorities arrested the prime suspect, Jordélia Pereira, as she disembarked from a bus in the city of Santa Inés. Pereira, the ex-wife of Rafael Silva, was reportedly angered over the couple’s divorce and his new relationship with Lira. Maranhão Civil Police believe that jealousy and revenge motivated the crime.
Although Pereira admitted to purchasing the chocolate, she denied tampering with it. Surveillance footage shows her wearing a wig while buying the Easter egg from a local shop in Imperatriz. She had traveled from Santa Inés and checked into a hotel before executing the plan.

Police officials stated that the case has sufficient evidence linking Pereira to the act. Authorities are currently working to identify the specific poison used, as forensic experts conduct further tests.
In a chilling detail shared by Luis’s aunt, Naiza Santos, the boy initially told his mother that he felt weak, a complaint she dismissed until he suddenly collapsed. Santos attempted to assist by inducing vomiting, during which Luis expelled a yellow substance.

Santos also recounted that shortly after receiving the Easter egg, Lira received a call from an unknown woman asking if she had received the gift. When Lira confirmed, the caller ominously replied, “You’ll find out who it is,” and ended the call without further explanation.
