14-Year-Old Student with Autism Identified Among Victims in Georgia High School Mass Shooting
Mason Schermerhorn, a 14-year-old student with autism, has been identified by his family as one of four victims tragically killed in a mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia on Wednesday.
Family members desperately shared Mason’s photo on social media after they were unable to contact him following the shooting, according to WSBTV. "If he is escalated, PLEASE use a calm voice with him,” relatives posted, pleading for help in locating the teen. “Let him know his mom is looking for him for reassurance.”
Later, Mason’s mother confirmed to the outlet that her son was among those who lost their lives in the attack. Alongside Mason, another student and two teachers were also fatally shot, allegedly by 14-year-old suspect Colt Gray.
Nine additional victims, including special education teacher David Phenix, were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, according to law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing.
