18-year-old woman fatally shot on Delaware State University campus

Police are investigating the tragic fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman near a dormitory on the campus of Delaware State University early Sunday morning.

According to Dover Police, campus police responded to reports of shots fired on campus at 1:40 a.m. near Warren-Franklin Hall. They discovered the young woman, who had sustained a gunshot wound to her upper body. Unfortunately, despite receiving aid and being transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment, she succumbed to her injuries.

The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, hailed from Wilmington, located roughly 50 miles north of the university. Importantly, she was not affiliated with the university as a student.

Dover police have initiated a homicide investigation and are collaborating closely with university police in their efforts.

In response to this tragic incident, Delaware State University issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to the safety and well-being of their campus community. They have taken immediate measures such as providing counseling services in the Tubman Laws Hall housing office, cancelling events for the day, increasing police patrols, and implementing a no-visitation policy for the day. These actions reflect the university's dedication to supporting their students and staff during this difficult time.
