4 Indian medical students drown in Russia, 2 bodies recovered
Four Indian medical students tragically drowned in the Volkhov River near St. Petersburg, Russia, while a fifth student survived and is currently receiving medical care, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported on Friday. The students were studying at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod.
The victims, identified as Harshal Anantrao Desale, Jishan Ashpak Pinjari, Jia Firoj Pinjari, and Malik Gulamgous Mohammad Yakub, were walking along the Volkhov River when they entered the water. The lone survivor, Nisha Bhupesh Sonawane, is under medical supervision.
In a tragic detail, Jishan Ashpak Pinjari was on a video call with his parents moments before the incident. All five students hailed from Jalgaon district in Maharashtra.
The MEA stated that local emergency services have recovered two bodies, and the search for the remaining two students continues. "Our Consulate in St. Petersburg remains in contact with the university and local authorities and is providing all possible assistance," the MEA said. The Indian consulate is coordinating with local authorities for the repatriation of the bodies and remains in touch with the students' families and the Jalgaon district administration.
Jalgaon District Collector Ayush Prasad confirmed that efforts are underway to bring the bodies back to India. "Best medical care is being provided to the student whose life has been saved... We hope the bodies will be sent back to India as per international protocol," he said.
The students, aged between 18 and 20, included siblings Jishan and Jia Firoj Pinjari from Amalner, and Harshal Desale from Bhadgaon. A university official described the incident as a tragic accident, occurring while the students were enjoying a walk during their free time.
Russian media reports suggested that the incident began when a female student waded into the river and got into trouble. Her four companions attempted to save her, resulting in the drowning of three.
The university and local authorities are working closely to manage the aftermath of the tragedy and ensure the families are supported during this difficult time.
