6 arrested in soccer star's murder at South African gas station

South African police announced on Wednesday the arrest of six suspects in connection with the murder of soccer star Luke Fleurs, who was part of the renowned Johannesburg club Kaizer Chiefs. The 24-year-old defender was fatally shot last week while refueling his car at a gas station in a northwestern suburb of the city, marking yet another tragic incident in the crime-ridden nation.

"Police have apprehended six suspects for the alleged hijacking and murder," stated police spokesman Mavela Masondo (SAPS).

Reports indicate that Fleurs was waiting at a petrol station in his Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI when two men approached him, brandishing firearms, and demanded he exit the vehicle. After complying, they shot him before fleeing in his car.

Masondo confirmed the arrests, which occurred early Wednesday in Johannesburg's southwestern township of Soweto, following the recovery of Fleurs's car by detectives two days prior.

Authorities suspect the detained individuals are part of a larger crime syndicate involved in various car hijackings across Gauteng province.

"The search for additional suspects is ongoing," Masondo added.

Fleurs, who previously represented South Africa's national under-23 team at the Tokyo Olympics, was a notable player for Kaizer Chiefs, a club renowned for its 53 domestic trophies.

South Africa grapples with a pervasive violent crime rate, a significant political concern leading up to the upcoming general elections in May. Opposition parties often criticize the government for what they perceive as its failure to address these issues.

Official data indicates nearly 84 murders per day between October and December, with Gun Free South Africa, a nonprofit advocating against gun violence, reporting that 31 people are killed by firearms daily in the country.
