A 6-year-old went into cardiac arrest after he was hit by a baseball. His mom saved his life
6-year-old Oscar Stuebe's life took a dramatic turn during a baseball game in Lake Worth, Florida, when he was struck by a fly ball, leading to cardiac arrest.
Thanks to his mother Sarah Stuebe's swift response and CPR skills, Oscar is now on the road to recovery and will soon be back on the baseball field, this time wearing a protective chest guard.
Oscar suffered from commotio cordis, a rare condition also experienced by Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin.
After spending several days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Oscar is showing positive signs and is currently resting at home. Sarah humorously mentions that managing Oscar's energetic spirit along with his three other brothers at home is quite a task.
While relieved that Oscar's condition is improving, the Stuebe family is determined to prevent such incidents in the future. During a double-header baseball game on March 10, Oscar was assisting his 7-year-old brother's team when the accident occurred.
A player from the opposing team hit a pop fly, and despite it not being a forceful hit, Oscar was unable to catch it and fell to the ground.
Sarah, a nurse, and Riley, a retired Marine Corps officer, sprang into action when they realized Oscar was in distress. They performed CPR and called for emergency assistance. Fortunately, the nearby West Palm Fire Station 2 responded swiftly, giving Oscar a better chance of survival.
Oscar was rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center, where he received critical care. The support from medical professionals, along with prayers from family and friends, played a crucial role in Oscar's recovery.
Sarah and Riley remained by Oscar's side throughout his hospitalization, showcasing unwavering dedication.
Now back home, Oscar is undergoing therapy to regain his strength and mobility. The Stuebes are advocating for greater awareness of commotio cordis and the importance of CPR training.
They have also taken proactive measures, such as ensuring their sons wear chest protectors during sports activities, to minimize risks.
The Stuebes express gratitude for the compassionate care they received and emphasize the unity within the sports community in times of crisis.
