A third miner is declared dead in a cave-in in southern Poland

An ambulance is leaving the Myslowice-Wesola coal mine in Myslowice, southern Poland, Tuesday, May 14, 2024 where two miners were killed, one went missing and another 12 were injured in a cave-in near the coal face.

A third miner's body was recovered a day after a cave-in at the Myslowice-Wesola coal mine in southern Poland injured 12 other workers, according to a company spokesperson on Wednesday.

The miner was pronounced dead, and the rescue operation concluded as investigators probe the cause of the collapse, said Aleksandra Siembiga of the Polish Mining Group.

The cave-in occurred around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, approximately 870 meters (2,800 feet) underground near the coal face where 15 miners were working.

This incident marks the second cave-in at the Myslowice-Wesola mine this year, following one on April 17 that resulted in the death of one miner. Additionally, two other coal mine workers lost their lives in accidents at different mines in Poland this year, while in 2023, 15 miners died in on-the-job accidents.
