The Anambra State Police Command has reported the arrest of several suspects in connection with the tragic killing of Silas Onyima, the President-General of the Umuoji community in the Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

According to DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, who confirmed the arrests during a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Monday, gunmen believed to be assassins invaded the residence of the deceased on Friday and fatally shot him while he was in the bathroom. He sustained multiple machete wounds before succumbing to his injuries.

In response to the incident, the state police command swiftly initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators, leading to the recent arrests. Although the exact number of suspects apprehended has not been disclosed by Ikenga, he mentioned that the arrests were made based on intelligence gathering implemented by the state Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye.

Ikenga stated, "The police are diligently interrogating the suspects to extract valuable information. Their identities will be revealed in due time." He also indicated that Commissioner Adeoye expressed satisfaction with the progress of the investigations, hinting at a forthcoming press briefing to provide further details.

Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo denounced the heinous act and instructed state security agencies to swiftly apprehend the culprits and ensure their prompt prosecution, aiming to deter similar incidents in the future.

Meanwhile, a police source disclosed that one of the apprehended suspects was a tenant of the deceased. This suspect was allegedly found in possession of Onyima's belongings, including his phones, ATM cards, and firearm, and was reportedly attempting to withdraw money from the deceased's account before being detained.

The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation at the divisional police station in Ogidi as the investigation progresses.
