Arizona woman who poisoned Air Force husband’s coffee with bleach dodges jail

Melody Felicano Johnson of Tucson, Arizona, Melody Felicano Johnson of Tucson, Arizona, was sentenced to a probation sentence that includes mandatory mental health treatment that goes into effect immediately

An Arizona woman who confessed to poisoning her Air Force husband by adding bleach to his coffee has reportedly managed to avoid jail time.

Melody Felicano Johnson, 40, admitted guilt last month to two counts of poisoning food or drink after placing trace amounts of bleach into her husband Roby Johnson’s coffee maker on July 11 and July 18, 2023.

Johnson received a sentence of probation, coupled with mandatory mental health treatment that commenced immediately. Additionally, she is prohibited from contacting her husband unless in the presence of legal representation.

Roby Johnson alleged that his wife’s actions were an attempt to secure death benefits, as per court documents.

Initially facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and introducing harmful substances into food, drink, or medicine, Johnson opted for a plea bargain instead. The couple, who have a child together, were in the midst of a divorce when the poisoning incidents occurred, as outlined in court records.

Johnson is seen in the family’s laundry room pouring bleach into a small container.

The scheme came to light when Roby noticed an unusual taste in his coffee in March 2023 while they were stationed in Germany. Suspecting foul play, he used pool testing strips to analyze the coffee, revealing elevated chlorine levels.

Roby revealed that Melody knew he would prep the coffee machine at night for a morning brew, allowing her to tamper with it. He chose to withhold his suspicions until their return to Tucson, Arizona, before notifying authorities, wanting to avoid dealing with European legal procedures.

Upon their relocation back to the US near Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Roby installed a hidden camera in their temporary accommodation, capturing Melody pouring bleach into the coffee machine. Despite an initial inconclusive police report, a subsequent video presented to the authorities led to Melody’s arrest on July 18.
