At least 19 dead after huge chunk of highway collapses
At least 19 individuals perished when a segment of highway crumbled in southern China this morning.
More than twelve vehicles plummeted down a slope when a 60ft portion of the road collapsed early on Wednesday, as per local authorities.
Witnesses informed local media they heard a loud sound and witnessed a hole appearing several meters wide behind them after passing the road section just before its collapse.
Media recordings and images showcased smoke and fire at the location.
Twisted highway barriers could be observed tilting downward into the flames.
Charred vehicles were also visible on the incline leading from the highway in Meizhou city, Guangdong province. Rescue teams transported 30 individuals to the hospital, stated broadcaster CCTV.
It mentioned that the individuals receiving treatment were ‘not currently at risk,’ although it provided no further details regarding their injuries. Around 500 rescuers were dispatched to the scene, according to CCTV.
The cause of the collapse remains undisclosed.
Nevertheless, Guangdong has encountered numerous extreme weather occurrences in recent weeks.
These have ranged from intense rain to flooding and a fatal tornado.
The prior week, flash floods claimed four lives and displaced 110,000 individuals.
They also destroyed numerous homes, closed schools, and caused flight cancellations and delays.
