At least 4 people killed, 27 injured after trains collide in the Czech Republic
A head-on collision between a high-speed passenger train and a freight train in the Czech Republic has resulted in the deaths of at least four people and injuries to 27 others. The incident occurred late Wednesday night in Pardubice, approximately 100 kilometers east of Prague, according to Interior Minister Vít Rakušan.
The high-speed passenger train, operated by the private RegioJet company, was en route to Kosice in eastern Slovakia and onward to Chop in Ukraine. Among the victims, at least two Ukrainian women lost their lives, as confirmed by Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry. An official from the Ukrainian Consulate in Brno is on-site, coordinating with local rescue and law enforcement agencies.
The collision did not result in any life-threatening injuries, Rakušan noted. The train had 380 passengers on board at the time of the accident. Fortunately, the drivers of both trains survived.
Transport Minister Martin Kupka stated that the primary railway line between Prague and the eastern regions of the country was closed for investigation but partially reopened nine hours later. Czech Railways has advised passengers to avoid using this route for the remainder of the day.
The incident has prompted a thorough investigation as authorities seek to determine the cause of the fatal collision.
