Baltimore Key Bridge collapse updates: Third victim recovered from wreckage as Biden pays tribute to workers
On Friday, divers recovered the body of a third victim, 38-year-old Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, from the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge, as announced by the Unified Command. The recovery took place around 10:30 am, according to officials.
Earlier that day, President Joe Biden received an aerial tour onboard Marine One of the bridge collapse site and was scheduled to meet with the families of the six construction workers who tragically lost their lives in the incident. This visit comes over a week after the fatal accident in Baltimore, during which the president flew over the collapsed bridge alongside officials, including Maryland Governor Wes Moore.
The US Army has provided a timeline for reopening the Port of Baltimore. They announced that a third channel, measuring 35-feet deep and 280-feet wide, will open by the end of April. Additionally, the port is expected to be fully operational by the end of May.
Currently, two temporary channels are open with depths of 11 and 15 feet, allowing limited passage but insufficient for larger container ships like the Dali to navigate through.
New video footage has also been released, depicting dive teams navigating the challenging conditions around the wreckage, highlighting the difficulties authorities are facing in their rescue and recovery efforts.
