Billionaire Dies After Accidentally Backing Tesla Into Pond
A new report sheds light on the tragic death of Angela Chao, CEO of Foremost Groups, in a pond near her Texas Hill Country ranch. According to The Wall Street Journal, Chao, 50, reversed her Tesla into the water after mistakenly making a three-point turn. Despite efforts by friends and emergency responders, Chao was unable to be saved.
Chao, a prominent figure in the shipping industry, was the daughter of James S.C. Chao, the founder of Foremost Groups, and the sister of former U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Elaine Chao. She was also the wife of billionaire venture capitalist Jim Breyer and had invited friends to celebrate the Chinese New Year on her ranch.
The incident occurred late on February 10 when Chao attempted to return to her ranch house from the guesthouse where her friends were staying. Dark conditions and unfamiliarity with the Tesla gearshift contributed to the accident. Despite efforts by emergency responders, Chao was declared deceased at the scene.
The Blanco County Sheriff's Office has indicated that the investigation into Chao's death remains active and potentially criminal in nature, although preliminary findings suggest it was an accident. The lack of an autopsy has raised questions surrounding the incident. Additionally, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell cited Chao's death as a factor in his decision to step down from his position in November.
