Binance Executive Collapses in Court During Money Laundering Trial

Breaking: Court remands Binance executive in prison custody over money laundering

A dramatic scene unfolded at a Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday when Tigran Gambaryan, a detained Binance executive facing money laundering charges, collapsed in open court due to alleged ill-health.

The incident occurred shortly after the trial resumed before Justice Emeka Nwite. When the case was called, Gambaryan, seated in the back row, did not step forward to the dock. Justice Nwite inquired about his whereabouts, prompting a lawyer from the defense team to assist Gambaryan towards the dock. As they walked, Gambaryan slumped, and the lawyer helped him sit in the front row.

Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mark Mordi, SAN, informed the court that his client was unwell and that a written application had been filed to notify the court of his condition. "My lord, the case may not certainly proceed today," Mordi stated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed that Gambaryan rested on the arm of his seat throughout the proceedings. Justice Nwite had previously denied Gambaryan's bail application on May 16, citing concerns from the EFCC that he might flee if released.

Additionally, the court was unable to proceed with a separate tax evasion charge filed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) against Binance Holdings Limited and Gambaryan on Wednesday due to his absence.
