Bodies of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies found at Bungonia four days after serving officer charged with murder.
Two bodies were discovered southwest of Sydney during the search for missing couple Jesse Baird and Luke Davies.
The grim find occurred four days after New South Wales police officer Beau Lamarre, 28, was charged with their murders.
Detectives announced Tuesday afternoon that a crime scene had been established at a rural property in Bungonia near Goulburn, approximately 160km southwest of Sydney, where the bodies were found concealed in surfboard bags. "Today, at that location, we believe we have located two bodies," stated NSW police commissioner, Karen Webb, addressing reporters. "The families have been notified. We are very confident we have located Luke and Jesse."
Webb noted that the discovery of the bodies was facilitated with the assistance of the accused.
Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald revealed that Tuesday morning marked the first instance since Lamarre's arrest that he had "willingly provided information" after obtaining legal representation.
Fitzgerald mentioned that Sen Const Lamarre, formerly a celebrity blogger known as Beaumont Lamarre-Condon, cooperated with detectives about the location during an interview at Silverwater jail in western Sydney, where he is detained.
Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty disclosed that the bodies were found beneath a fence on the property on Jerrara Road, with apparent efforts made to conceal them with rocks and debris.
Earlier in the day, investigators had combed through the Royal National Park south of Sydney and conducted inquiries at Grays Point Oval near Cronulla.
Webb informed that divers had concluded their search of dams at another property in Bungonia, initially searched on Sunday. The bodies were located about 20 minutes away from the initial search location, according to police.
Lamarre was charged last Friday with the murder of 26-year-old Baird, a former Channel Ten presenter, and 29-year-old Davies, a Qantas flight attendant and Baird's new partner.
Doherty stated that police would allege in court that there was "some type of relationship at some stage" between Lamarre and Baird, noting that the relationship "did not end well."
Police allege Lamarre killed the couple on Monday, February 19, at Baird’s shared residence in Paddington, Sydney's eastern suburbs, using his service-issued handgun. Lamarre then allegedly hired a white van to dispose of their bodies, according to police.
The purported use of a police handgun will undergo internal review by NSW Police, overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC), in addition to Victoria Police.
"We're in a position where a police firearm was used, and that can never happen again," Webb emphasized on Tuesday. "So we've got to explore ways to mitigate that risk in any way we can."
Webb mentioned that Baird’s and Davies’ families had arrived from interstate, and she had personally spoken to them.
