Bodies of pastor’s wife and friend allegedly killed by ‘God’s Misfits’ were found in freezer on farm
Authorities discovered the bodies of two missing Kansas mothers, Jilian Kelley and Veronica Butler, inside a freezer buried on a farm. The women were allegedly murdered by members of the anti-government group "God’s Misfits."
Jilian Kelley, the wife of a local pastor, and her friend Veronica Butler had set off from Kansas to visit Butler’s children in Oklahoma. They disappeared on March 30, and their bodies were found two weeks later. On April 13, four individuals were arrested for murder and kidnapping in connection with the case. A fifth member of the group, Paul Grice, 31, was later apprehended.
Newly filed court documents reveal that the bodies were found in a chest freezer after a two-day excavation in a cow pasture. Various items, including clothing and a knife, stained with "possible blood" were also recovered. The exact manner of their deaths has not been disclosed.
The farm property where the bodies were found was leased by Tad Cullum, one of the suspects. Court documents indicated that Paul Grice asked a witness suspicious questions about DNA evidence and expressed concerns about his own DNA being found at the burial site.
When Cullum was arrested on April 13, Grice was present and had a bandaged finger, which he claimed was injured while working on his truck. However, a tip suggested the injury occurred while cutting fencing at the end of March.
Data from suspects’ devices potentially linking them to the crime scene has been seized. Cole and Cora Twombly, two of the suspects, had cellphones with data placing them at both the abduction and burial sites. Another suspect, Tifany Machel Adams, purchased cellphones and a device from Walmart in February.
Prior to Grice’s arrest, Adams, 54; Cullum, 43; Cole Twombly, 50; and Cora Twombly, 44, were accused of luring Butler and Kelley to a rural location before kidnapping and murdering them on March 30. Butler believed she was picking up her children from their grandmother, Adams, for a supervised visit.
Court documents reveal a long-standing custody battle over Butler’s children, with Butler’s ex-partner, Wrangler Rickman, allegedly suggesting that Adams would "take out" Butler. Adams, Cullum, Grice, and the Twomblys reportedly planned the murder for at least a month, even staking out Butler’s home.
The women were ambushed on Highway 95, with their car found abandoned. The exact causes of Butler and Kelley’s deaths have not been officially revealed, but it is believed they were not shot.
