Bomb squad scrambles to service station over suspect explosive device with A19 shut down
A major road has been closed in both directions after the bomb squad was called to a service station this afternoon.
Cleveland Police said on its social media pages a "suspected explosive device" had been discovered and is waiting to be examined. National Highways North East confirmed the A19 in County Durham is closed in both directions at Ron Perry service station owing to the police incident.
Local reports suggested the device was possibly a hand grenade, although it is yet to be confirmed. A bomb disposal robot was photographed at the scene as recovery of the device got underway.
The force said: "The A19 is currently closed in both directions between A689 Wolverston and the A179. This is due to a suspected explosive device being taken to a garage and waiting to be examined by EOD. Please find alternative routes and thank you for your patience."
Motorists and other members of the public have been urged to avoid the area as the situation continues. National Highways said: "The A19 in County Durham is CLOSED in both directions between the A179 (Hartlepool) and the A689 (Billingham) due to a Cleveland Police incident. More information to follow shortly. Please allow extra journey time if you're travelling in the area this afternoon."
Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed it is also at the scene of the incident. A spokesman said on social media: "We are currently dealing with an incident on the A19 southbound near Elwick; both north and south carriageways are closed. Please avoid this area if possible."
