Brooklyn Hate Crime: Driver Attempts to Run Down Orthodox Jewish Students, Rabbi (video)

Taxi driver Asghar Ali, 58, allegedly attempted to mow down a group of students and a rabbi outside a Jewish school in Brooklyn as he yelled: 'I'm going to kill all the Jews'

In a shocking antisemitic attack, a man attempted to run down Orthodox Jewish students and a rabbi outside a Brooklyn Yeshiva on Wednesday, allegedly shouting, “I’m gonna kill all the Jews,” sources told The Post.

Video footage from the Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol captures the harrowing moment when the driver revved his engine and mounted the curb, swerving toward Orthodox Jews near Mesivta Nachlas Yakov School in Canarsie around 11:25 a.m.

Surveillance camera footage shows a cab driver, later identified by police as Ali, after he drove up onto the sidewalk near the Mesivta Nachlas Yakov School building on Wednesday morning

The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Asghar Ali, a Pakistani immigrant and livery cab driver with a history of mental illness, faces over a dozen charges, including attempted murder, attempted assault, and hate crimes, the NYPD reported. The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating, and detectives interviewed Ali on Wednesday night.

Police do not currently believe the attack is terror-related and have found no evidence linking Ali to radical groups online.

Ali was driving a 2011 white Crown Victoria when he initially turned onto East 55th Street, veering toward students in Orthodox attire. After circling the block, he returned to target two more students and a rabbi standing outside.

“I’m gonna kill all the Jews,” Ali allegedly shouted, according to police. The intended victims escaped unharmed by fleeing into the building.

Authorities reported five victims: three 18-year-olds, a 41-year-old man, and a 44-year-old man. Rabbi Twersky, who works at the Yeshiva, recounted how the driver tried to strike a student on his phone at the corner of Glenwood Road and East 55th Street. Twersky described how Ali then drove the wrong way on East 56th Street, aiming at a group of 30 to 40 students.

Tire marks were still visible on the sidewalk near the Yeshiva Wednesday night, and a police car was stationed outside.

Police have apprehended the 58-year-old suspect, pictured here.

Initially escaping, Ali was quickly located by the Shomrim Safety Patrol, whose members alerted NYPD officers. Ali was apprehended after stopping at a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts.

“We retrieved the video footage and got the guy’s plate number,” said Bob Moskovitz, executive coordinator of the patrol. “It was a distinct car, a Crown Vic. One of our members spotted it during a daily patrol.”

Ali, in the US for over two decades, has four prior arrests, including a 1998 charge for false personation. Although he identifies as a cab driver, he lacks a valid TLC license.

“This is not somebody we want driving around with this anti-Semitic, anti-Jewish climate,” Moskovitz said. “The community can now be a little more relaxed.”
