Burna Boy’s Grammys performance cements African music’s ascendance

On the Grammy stage, Burna Boy, accompanied by 21 Savage and Brandy, made sure the world felt the pulse of African music's global rise. The trio showcased the richness of the continent's musical landscape, emphasizing its ascendancy on the global stage.

Earlier in the evening, South Africa's Tyla clinched the first-ever Grammy for Best Musical Performance with "Water," adding another feather to Africa's musical cap. Burna Boy, already a Grammy holder for 2020's "Twice as Tall," stood proudly among the nominees.

Host Trevor Noah, hailing from South Africa, couldn't help but acknowledge the musical diversity, stating, “You know, there is no denying that over the past few years, Afrobeats has swept the globe. And I’m proud to say that over the past year, South Africa’s very own amapiano has truly taken over music in a special way. Shout out to Tyla.”

The essence of the new Grammy category, celebrating regional musical traditions and recognizing recordings that embrace unique local expressions across the African continent, was truly felt in this vibrant showcase of African musical excellence.
