Cameroon Football Federation rejects Samuel Eto’o’s resignation

Samuel Eto'o's attempt to resign as president of the Cameroon Football Federation faced a swift rejection from its executive committee on Monday, amid swirling allegations of misconduct and corruption surrounding the iconic footballer.

Eto'o, renowned for clinching the African Player of the Year award a record four times, has found himself embroiled in a mire of accusations ranging from improper conduct to match-fixing. The federation disclosed that during a meeting in Yaoundé, Cameroon's capital, Eto'o initiated proceedings by offering his resignation, urging fellow members to follow suit "in good faith."

However, following deliberations, the executive committee opted to uphold their current mandates, unanimously rebuffing Eto'o's resignation and expressing continued trust in his leadership. The federation emphasized its commitment to Eto'o's vision for the reconstruction and development of Cameroon football, as outlined in his plan ratified during the elective general assembly in December 2021, the same month Eto'o assumed office.

Notably absent from the federation's statement were details of any other decisions or resolutions made during the meeting. Amid the turmoil, the future of Cameroon coach Rigobert Song remained uncertain, with the team's lackluster performance at the Africa Cup of Nations casting doubt over his tenure.

Cameroon's disappointing campaign saw the five-time champions teetering on the brink of elimination, requiring a late victory in the group stage to secure progression, only to falter against Nigeria in the round of 16.

Eto'o's leadership has come under intensified scrutiny, with allegations of corruption and impropriety surfacing in recent months. Reports by The Athletic shed light on a trove of evidence purportedly implicating Eto'o in various transgressions, including match-fixing and abuse of power, prompting investigations by FIFA's ethics committee and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan star's involvement with a sports betting company also raised concerns within Cameroon, potentially violating federation regulations. Eto'o's presidency, marked by promises of reform, has been overshadowed by these controversies, underscoring the challenges facing Cameroonian soccer's quest for transparency and integrity.

Despite the setbacks, Eto'o's enduring legacy as a football icon remains untarnished, with a glittering career spanning four World Cups for Cameroon between 1998 and 2014.
