Catholic Bishops Call On Tinubu To Release Nnamdi Kanu

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has urged President Bola Tinubu to utilize his influence to explore all legal avenues for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for the betterment of the South-East region.

This appeal follows the recent rejection of Kanu's bail application by a Federal High Court in Abuja, with Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji, the President of CBCN, making the plea during the episcopal ordination event in Imo State.

Most Rev. Ugorji emphasized that Kanu's release could contribute significantly to economic growth and security in the South-East. He pointed out that Kanu's prolonged detention has been a major factor in the region's insecurity and highlighted the adverse economic impact of the weekly sit-at-home protests.

Meanwhile, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court denied bail to Kanu but ordered an expedited hearing of his case on charges related to treasonable felony.

Kanu, held by the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, attended the court session where his legal team expressed dissatisfaction with the court's decision, citing difficulties in communicating with their client and alleged mistreatment in custody.
