Chicago woman loses unborn baby after she and husband were attacked on date night by '14 year-old boy and 17 year-old girl'
A 41-year-old woman, identified only as Nina, suffered a brutal attack by a group of teens in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood, leading to a tragic miscarriage. The incident occurred on Friday night as Nina and her husband were returning home from a date.
The couple was surrounded by at least 10 young individuals who claimed ownership of the street. Nina recounted to Fox32 that she was pepper-sprayed, kicked in the stomach, and had a clump of her hair pulled out while her husband was restrained by the mob.
Police arrested a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, charging them with misdemeanor battery. Both were released pending court appearances. "They didn't steal anything. They said, 'We own the street. You can't just walk around prancing in your little dress,'" Nina recalled.
This violent encounter comes less than two weeks after residents held an emergency town hall meeting to address the rising crime in the area. Assaults in Streeterville have jumped 12% in the past year.
"We moved here thinking it would be quieter," said resident Mark Wolfe. "Now we have what my wife and I refer to as the 'Saturday night scaries' because of the kids that come in and just cause havoc."
Nina, who was two weeks pregnant, lost her baby hours after the attack. "We believe in faith, and it wasn't meant to be," she said. "So, we don't know why this happened to us."
The neighborhood gained notoriety in 2020 when celebrity Jussie Smollett staged a racially motivated attack on himself. Since then, violent crimes have surged across Chicago. Aggravated battery is up 20% year-to-date compared to the same period in 2021, with robberies up 38% and thefts up 77%. Over the Memorial Day weekend alone, 41 people were shot and nine died, including a five-year-old girl.
Local alderman Brian Hopkins has called for upgraded charges against the arrested teens. "We're asking the state attorney to consider upgrading those charges to felony charges resulting in great bodily harm," he said. "Both victims suffered extensive injuries, and the medical examinations are ongoing."
Despite a city-wide 10 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors, residents fear a summer of increased violence. "I'm concerned. I'm an older person, and we don't go out at night anymore," said Barbara Webb.
Deborah Gershbein, president of the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents, added, "We've never had the issues in the neighborhood that we are currently having. Everyone is concerned because summer is just beginning."
