China: Three teenagers detained in Handan over classmate's death
Authorities in Handan, northern China, have apprehended three teenage boys in connection with the tragic death of their 13-year-old classmate, identified as Wang, in an incident that has ignited widespread outrage and discussions about juvenile crime.
The victim's remains were discovered buried in an abandoned vegetable garden, with reports indicating that he had been a victim of bullying at school, as disclosed by his father.
The case is being treated as an intentional homicide, and all three detained teenagers are below the age of 14. According to Chinese law, individuals aged 12 to 14 can face criminal prosecution only with approval from the Supreme People's Procuratorate.
The victim and his classmates are part of the "left-behind children" category, referring to kids in China whose parents work in urban areas while they live with grandparents in rural regions.
The incident has sparked a wave of sorrow and outcry on social media platforms like Weibo and Douyin, with many users demanding justice for the victim's family and urging strict punishment for the suspects, despite their young age.
The victim's father, in a Douyin video, detailed the timeline of events leading to his son's disappearance and subsequent demise, including the transfer of money to one of the classmates before the incident.
The family's lawyer, Zang Fanqing, revealed that the victim had endured prolonged bullying from his classmates.
During interrogation, the detained teenagers eventually led authorities to the boy's burial site after initially denying knowledge of its whereabouts.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the tragic killing.
