China Warns Students of Espionage Risks: Beware of "Handsome Men and Beautiful Women" Posing as Spies
China’s top intelligence agency has issued a stern warning to students with access to sensitive data, urging them to be cautious of "handsome men and beautiful women" who may feign romantic interest as part of espionage schemes for foreign entities.
In a detailed advisory posted on its official WeChat account on Wednesday, the Ministry of State Security highlighted how foreign espionage agents are increasingly targeting young students, leveraging their curiosity and openness to new experiences to extract classified information.
The agency revealed that foreign intelligence operatives often disguise themselves as university scholars or employees of research institutions, offering high-paying part-time jobs under the guise of market research or academic exchanges. They then reel in students through seemingly innocuous interactions, including social media training sessions or video conferences.
These spies may even pose as romantic partners, using fake emotions to lure students into disclosing sensitive information. The ministry did not specify which foreign entities are involved but emphasized the growing threat of espionage targeting China’s academic and research communities.
China has intensified its crackdown on perceived national security threats, issuing multiple warnings and revealing espionage cases throughout the year. The government continues to urge vigilance among its citizens, particularly those with access to confidential or classified information.
