The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at Humphrey Double H Farms Enterprises Inc. in Carrollton. According to state troopers, an unidentified shopper was handling a firearm when it accidentally discharged. The single round struck 50-year-old Chad Wainscott, who was also in the shop at the time. "Chad had a heart of gold … he would NEVER let a conversation end with goodbye, always 'See you later!' A beautiful soul all the way around," a mourner wrote on his obituary page. The gunman is cooperating with investigators, and no charges have been filed.

Affectionately nicknamed "Little Chigger" after his grandfather, Wainscott had recently become a grandfather himself to baby Lance, whom he adored. He worked as a farmer alongside his father for several years and was beloved in the community for his passion for the outdoors. "His love for the outdoors defined him, with some of his favorite pastimes including hunting, collecting guns, hats, and knives, searching for four-leaf clovers, and capturing the beauty of sunsets and cows through photography. Chad was known to be happiest outdoors," his grieving family said.

"Chad’s warm smile and infectious personality will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him."
