Delta Gov Suspends Agric Commissioner, Others

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved the suspension of the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Omoun Perekebena Perez. The suspension comes after alleged financial impropriety in the ministry.

The decision was made to allow an unhindered investigation into the matter, as stated by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, yesterday. Also under investigation are senior officers, including the Permanent Secretary, Engineer, and Chief Accountant in the ministry. They have been directed to go on compulsory leave per Civil Service rules.

The alleged fraud is related to the ongoing greenhouse agricultural project of the state government. A seven-man committee, led by Dr. Kingsley Emu, has been formed to investigate claims and infractions in the project's management. The government clarified that the suspension does not presume guilt but ensures an unbiased investigation.

Delta State Head of Service, Sir Reginald Bayoko, explained that the suspension is a bureaucratic routine, and it applies to political appointees like the commissioner. He emphasized adherence to service rules and ethical journalism while holding leaders accountable.

It was reported that the commissioner allegedly diverted funds meant for the greenhouse project into a private bank account, considered an illegal action.
