Doctor Charged with Attempted Murder of Wife at Hawaii Tourist Spot

A doctor has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly pushing his wife off a hiking trail at a well-known Hawaii tourist spot and then assaulting her with a rock. The incident occurred at the Pali Lookout, a famous panoramic viewpoint on Oahu, where 46-year-old anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig allegedly attacked his 36-year-old wife, nuclear engineer Arielle Konig.
According to authorities, the altercation began when Arielle refused to take a photo with her husband. Enraged, Konig allegedly pushed her off the trail, punched her repeatedly, and struck her in the head with a rock. Reports indicate that he also attempted to stab her with two syringes, though it remains unclear whether they contained any substances.

Arielle Konig sustained multiple facial and head injuries and was rushed to a hospital in serious condition following the attack. The Honolulu Police Department arrested Konig near Pali Highway around 6:45 p.m. after a brief foot chase, approximately eight hours after the alleged assault. Following the incident, Pali Lookout was temporarily closed for the remainder of the day.
Konig, who was employed as an anesthesiologist in Maui through an independent contractor, has been suspended pending further investigation. Maui Health confirmed the suspension in a statement, emphasizing its commitment to patient safety and cooperation with law enforcement. The statement reiterated that Konig was not a direct employee of Maui Health but worked at various medical facilities, including Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Authorities continue to investigate the case as legal proceedings move forward.
