Drama As Ini Edo and Chinenye Nworah Allegedly Fight Over Ownership of Netflix Movie, ’Shanty Town'

Nollywood actress Ini Edo finds herself entangled in a legal dispute with Chinenye Nworah regarding the ownership of their series, 'Shanty Town'. Recent developments reveal a rift between the two figures concerning the rights to the film. Reports indicate that Netflix's African team initiated discussions last year with Nworah and Giant Creative Media for a second season of 'Shanty Town', following the success of the initial installment.

However, on January 15, 2024, Edo's legal team issued a warning to Netflix, urging them to halt negotiations with Nworah and Giant Creative Media regarding the sequel. Allegedly, Edo sent a cease and desist letter to Netflix, asserting her claim to 5% of the proceeds, contending that ownership rights extend beyond Nworah alone. Edo argues that Nworah's previous agreements with two other entities necessitate shared ownership among three parties.

Edo's letter presents detailed arguments contesting Nworah's exclusive rights to 'Shanty Town'. Key points include the shared production agreement among Edo, Nworah, and Joy Odiete dating back to December 13, 2019, aimed at creating five films over a decade. Moreover, a subsequent deal in June 2021 involving multiple production entities, including Minini Empire Productions and Giant Creative Media, established shared intellectual property rights and entitlement to 5% of profits.

In response, Nworah refutes Edo's claims through a press release, asserting herself as the sole initiator and copyright holder of 'Shanty Town'. Dismissing Edo's allegations as false and malicious, Nworah emphasizes her sole ownership of the series in the February 22, 2024 statement issued by Giant Creative Media. They urge the public to disregard Edo's assertions regarding intellectual property ownership, reaffirming Nworah's sole proprietorship.
