Driver plows car into Virginia couple, killing wife as she joined husband on his nightly walk for the first time
A driver has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the tragic death of a woman who was out walking with her husband.
Derek Bizzell shared that it was the first time his 42-year-old wife, Shaunda, had joined him for his evening exercise when they were struck by a car. The incident occurred while the couple was walking the second lap of Derek's usual neighborhood loop in Chesterfield, Virginia. They noticed the vehicle veering from the middle of the street towards them.
"We walked around the curb. We could see a car coming up the middle of the street like cars always do, and then he got closer to us," Derek Bizzell recounted to KCRG. "I could see him veer. I screamed her name, and all I heard was the thump."
Bizzell mentioned that he was knocked under the car, while his wife was thrown on top of it. Despite his shock and panic, he managed to dial 911 for help, with assistance from neighbors who spoke to emergency responders on his behalf.
Shaunda was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but tragically passed away later, leaving behind her devastated husband and their two adult children.
Describing his late wife, Bizzell fondly remembered her as a beautiful soul with a radiant smile, a genuine laugh, and a deep love for God and family. He expressed his deep grief and said, "I'm a little banged up, but if I could trade places with my wife, I would."
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 22-year-old Daniel N. Anderson, is believed to have deliberately crashed his vehicle into the couple. Police investigations revealed that Anderson had been dialing 911 and making disturbing threats, including threats to harm a school, bomb a building, and assault police officers.
Anderson was apprehended at the scene and is now facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder, malicious wounding, making threats of bodily harm or death, and making threats to bomb or damage buildings.
He is currently held at Chesterfield Jail without bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 21, according to court records.
