DSS Denies Reports of Invasion at Emir of Kano's Palace Amid Deposition Rumors
Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) were spotted at the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, on Thursday, amid growing rumors of the Emir’s imminent deposition. This follows the Kano State House of Assembly's passage of the Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Law (Repeal Bill), 2024, earlier that morning.
Newsmen who visited the palace around 11 am observed DSS operatives stationed there. The Assembly's bill, which dissolved the four newly created emirate councils in the state, has fueled speculation about the potential return of the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido II.
However, the DSS denied media reports alleging an invasion of the Emir’s Palace. The state Director of DSS, Muhammad Alhassan, clarified that the operatives were deployed as part of a security arrangement for the visit of the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, to the Emir. The visit was postponed due to the Emir's absence, leading to the withdrawal of the DSS personnel.
Alhassan emphasized that the DSS presence had no connection to the recent developments at the State House of Assembly. He urged the public to disregard the false and malicious reports, which he claimed were aimed at causing unnecessary tension and misinformation.
The State House of Assembly's repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law, 2019, dissolved the Emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano, adding to the ongoing political developments in the state.
