Ebonyi State University Student Allegedly Commits Suicide Over Academic Struggles (video)

Favour Ugwuka, a final-year student at Ebonyi State University in Abakaliki, has reportedly committed suicide in her hostel on the Ishieke Campus.

According to sources, Ugwuka, a student in the Department of English, had successfully passed all her courses except for one, which she repeatedly failed. The lecturer of this particular course had allegedly vowed that she would never pass.

In a sorrowful video circulating online, Ugwuka’s mother accused the lecturer, Dr. Enyi, of causing her daughter’s death. "Dr. Enyi said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him. He should come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide," she lamented.

Rex Nwome, a graduate of the institution and Ugwuka's close friend, confirmed that she had been struggling with depression due to her inability to pass the course. He noted that despite passing all other courses, she had to pay extra tuition fees to retake the failed course, only to fail again. Her exclusion from the recently shortlisted National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) list exacerbated her despair.

"The girl suffered a lot of depression because she was only left wandering about the EBSU seeking help. She was very desperate to graduate and serve," Nwome said, expressing his grief over her tragic decision.

The Ebonyi Command of the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident on Thursday. DSP Joshua Ukandu, the command’s spokesman, stated, "Yes, the command received the report of suicide by a female student."

Attempts to obtain a statement from the university have so far been unsuccessful.
