Female college student fights back against armed robber and yanks magazine from gun — as man watches just feet away

Madelyn was robbed at gunpoint near her college campus.

Wild video captures a female University of Chicago student bravely fighting back against an armed robber, astonishingly dislodging the magazine from her attacker’s firearm — all while a man nearby sat without intervening.

The courageous 21-year-old economics senior, identified only as Madelyn, was among three university students targeted by armed robbers in quick succession on Wednesday.

“I see a man in a ski mask coming toward me, and I attempt to keep walking,” Madelyn recounted. In the tussle with the suspect, Madelyn managed to seize the magazine from his gun and tossed it into nearby foliage. The scene, caught on surveillance footage, showed Madelyn looking around, seemingly seeking help from a male student sitting on the ground just feet away, who watched without intervening.

The entire incident was caught on surveillance video.

The armed assailant grabbed Madelyn’s phone before fleeing, but police later recovered both the phone and the magazine she had tossed.

Minutes earlier, two other students on opposite sides of the street were confronted by four armed suspects who robbed them and escaped in a black Infiniti, as reported by the University of Chicago Police Department.

University police are investigating the first incident, while Chicago Police Department is handling Madelyn’s case. Fortunately, there were no injuries in either incident, per campus officials.

Reflecting on the incident, Madelyn expressed a mix of disbelief and desensitization to frequent security alerts on campus.

The suspect eventually made off with Madelyn's phone.

“I’ve always felt safe, personally. It’s upsetting as students we get these alerts all of the time. They’re very frequent, they vary in the severity of them. It’s just troubling that it becomes so desensitizing,” Madelyn.

“No one ever thinks it will be them. When I was confronted with that moment, I was in utter disbelief,” she added about her experience.

As of Friday morning, authorities had not made any arrests in connection with either incident.
