FIFA Condemns ‘Unacceptable’ Violence at Turkish Football Match
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has condemned the violent attack on Fenerbahce players by Trabzonspor fans, calling for immediate action and accountability.
After Fenerbahce's 3-2 victory at Trabzon, fans stormed the pitch, assaulting players and creating chaos. Twelve people were detained by police for throwing objects and physically confronting the players.
Infantino took to social media to express his outrage, stating that such violence has no place in society and players must be safe to enjoy the game. He urged authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions.
Turkey's interior minister announced an investigation into the incident, emphasizing that football violence is unacceptable. The Turkish Football Federation also pledged to punish those responsible.
Despite the victory, Fenerbahce players left Trabzon under tight security measures. Trabzonspor coach and Fenerbahce manager both lamented the tense atmosphere in Turkish football, emphasizing the need for tolerance and common sense.
This incident adds to a series of violent episodes in Turkey's top league this season, including the arrest of a club president for assaulting a referee in December.
