Fire Damages Kwara State High Court Complex


Kwara State's new High Court complex, situated in the Government Reservation Area of Ilorin, the state capital, was engulfed by fire on Tuesday. The inferno caused significant damage to the main building and offices within the complex.


Reportedly noticed around 7:25 am, the fire ravaged 40 offices, three open courtrooms, the Registry Department, and the Litigation Office. According to the State Fire Service, the fire was triggered by a surge in electricity supply to the area.


In a statement, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident, noting that firefighters promptly responded to a distress call.


"On the morning of February 13, 2024, at 07:33 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service received a distress call regarding a fire outbreak at the State High Court in Ilorin," Adekunle said. "Responding swiftly, the fire crew rushed to the scene to find the imposing State High Court building ablaze."


He commended the firefighters for their courage and determination in combating the flames, which threatened to cause catastrophic loss. Adekunle also emphasized the importance of electrical safety measures in preventing such incidents.


Additionally, Adekunle confirmed a separate fire incident in Ilorin on Monday evening, where a building containing 15 rooms and a shop was completely consumed by fire due to a power surge. The Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, urged the public to prioritize safety awareness and precautions, emphasizing the importance of switching off electrical appliances before bedtime to prevent fire outbreaks.
