A Florida bus driver fatally shot two passengers after pulling a gun during a dispute with a rider, authorities reported.

The Miami Gardens Police Department is investigating the incident, which took place early Sunday morning on a Miami-Dade Transit bus. According to investigators, the driver became involved in an argument with a passenger before opening fire, striking two individuals.

"We don't know why he fired his weapon. We know that there was a disturbance going on inside the bus," a police spokesperson stated.

The Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works emphasized that while it prioritizes employee safety, it strictly prohibits drivers from carrying weapons while on duty. A department spokesperson confirmed that the incident remains under investigation and that full cooperation is being provided to law enforcement.

Both victims were airlifted to a hospital but succumbed to their injuries. Authorities have not released the driver’s identity, and no charges have been announced at this time.

A witness on board the bus during the shooting stated that the dispute began when the driver refused to allow a man to board with a bicycle, which he allegedly suspected was stolen. Miami-Dade Transit regulations require passengers to use the bike rack on the front of the bus rather than bringing bicycles inside.

According to the witness, when the man threatened the driver and reached into his bag, the driver drew a firearm and fired six shots, striking both the man with the bike and another passenger who was not involved in the dispute.

Police have not confirmed whether anyone other than the driver was armed at the time.

The Transport Workers Union Local 291, which represents Miami-Dade transit operators, described the situation as tragic.

"We are devastated by these tragic events and extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives," the union stated. "The safety of both our operators and the riding public is and always will be our highest priority."
