Florida mother charged after daycare staff find gun inside her 2-year-old’s lunchbox

The 39-year-old mother placed the gun inside her son’s lunchbox to bring it inside her apartment.

A mother in Florida, Shanae Davis, 39, has been charged after a handgun was discovered inside her 2-year-old son’s lunchbox by day care staff.

Davis faces charges including allowing a minor access to a firearm and child neglect following the incident at Jackson’s Daycare Center in Riviera Beach, where a teacher found a 9mm Glock 43 handgun in the lunchbox.

The discovery alarmed teachers and shocked parents who were later informed about the incident.

"It's scary," expressed Stephenne Warembourg. "I mean, you know when I'm sending my kid to school thinking that he's going to be safe? I mean, are they? I don't know."

According to Riviera Beach Police Department documents, Davis admitted that the gun belonged to her and that she usually keeps it in her vehicle’s glove box. However, due to recent break-ins in her apartment complex, she had been bringing the gun inside her home.

On the night of March 14, Davis placed the gun inside her son’s lunchbox to take it inside, as she does not carry a purse. She then forgot to remove it the next morning.

Police were alerted, responded promptly, and arrested Davis. She was released on bail on Friday, March 15, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office records.

West Palm Beach Police spokesman Mike Jachels emphasized the importance of gun safety, stating that such oversights or carelessness could lead to tragic outcomes. Fortunately, no one was harmed in this instance.
