Former Barcelona and Brazil defender Dani Alves was released from custody on Monday after posting a €1 million (£857,000) bail.

In February, Alves was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for his involvement in an incident at a nightclub on December 31, 2022.

The 40-year-old has spent a total of 14 months behind bars, completing approximately a quarter of his sentence.

Dani Alves Release From Prison - Brians 2 Prison, Barcelona, Spain - March 25, 2024 Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves leaves the Brians 2 prison on bail along with his lawyer Ines Guardiola while he appeals his rape conviction

Alves emerged from prison in Barcelona on Monday afternoon accompanied by his lawyer Ines Guardiola.

As part of his bail conditions, Alves must surrender both his Brazilian and Spanish passports, preventing him from leaving Spain. Additionally, the court has issued a restraining order preventing Alves from approaching the victim within 1,000 metres (3,300 feet).

In response to his release, Ester Garcia, the lawyer representing Alves’ victim, expressed surprise and outrage, indicating plans to appeal the decision.

"It is scandalous that he has been released," Garcia stated. "It appears that justice is favoring the wealthy. Despite claims of limited financial capacity, I have no doubt he will source the required million from wherever he can."

Alves' ex-wife, Dinorah Santana, with whom he shares two children, has also voiced her disapproval of the decision to release him.

"In life, there are moments when you must sit at the table with Judas without losing your peace. Today is one of those days for me," Santana posted on Instagram.

Later, Santana emphasized feeling exploited and stated in a Spanish television interview, "For me, he no longer exists. He is dead to me."
