Former NYPD Officer Pleads Guilty to Murder and Attempted Murder in Love Triangle Shooting
Yvonne Wu, a former NYPD officer, has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting her ex-girlfriend's new partner and injuring her ex-girlfriend with her police-issued gun. The incident occurred on October 13, 2021, in Brooklyn, New York.
Wu, 34, admitted to the double shooting in Brooklyn Supreme Court. She shot her ex-girlfriend, Jenny Li, 34, and killed Li's new partner, Jamie Liang, 24, at Li's Bensonhurst home. Wu, who was off-duty at the time, had sneaked into the home through the backdoor and waited for the pair.
The New York Attorney General's Office stated that after the shooting, Wu waited in the home until police arrived and calmly confessed. Liang died in the hospital 50 minutes later, while Li survived.
Neighbors described the aftermath as chaotic, with one witness telling DailyMail.com, "It was pandemonium. Chaos. Two bodies being brought out on stretchers... one having compressions on her chest."
Following the incident, Wu was suspended without pay and has now been officially dismissed from the police department. Sources indicate that Wu and Li had split about a month before the shooting, with Wu believing they would reconcile.
Friends of the victims described Wu as a "psychopath" and claimed the shooting was preventable. They reported that Wu had previously had an altercation with Li and Liang, which was not reported to the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau because Li believed she could handle the situation herself.
Liang's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Wu and New York City, alleging that Wu was "psychologically unfit and a danger to others." The family's attorney, Sanford Rubenstein, noted that the guilty plea impacts the liability of the city and the NYPD, and they plan to depose Wu under oath.
Wu pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree attempted murder. She will be held without bail until her sentencing on August 28, where she is expected to receive a 27-year sentence—22 years for murdering Liang and five years for attempting to murder Li.
Friends and family have expressed their grief and anger over the tragedy. Liang's father, Ying Liang, stated, "She killed someone in cold blood. I'd like to see that outcome, I'd like to see she gets the max."
A GoFundMe page set up for Liang's family has raised over $45,000. The page organizer, Elaine Zhao, and other loved ones remembered Liang as a kind and lively person who was loved by many and brought joy to those around her.
