The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a container ship — sending cars plunging into the water in what was quickly declared a mass-casualty event.

Six construction workers are unaccounted for and two people have been rescued, authorities said during a mid-morning press conference.

Speaking for just a few minutes this afternoon, President Biden promised federal funds “to pay for the entire cost of reconstructing” the bridge.

The six missing people in the Baltimore bridge collapse are construction workers who were repairing the span when it was struck by a large cargo ship Tuesday morning.

The construction workers were repairing potholes on the Francis Scott Key Bridge overnight when the cargo ship Dali rammed into one of the bridge’s supports, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said during a news conference.

Eight people were on top of the bridge at the time of the collision, which instantly caused the structure to topple into the water below.
