A massive explosion occurred on Wednesday near the Karu Bridge on the Abuja-Keffi Expressway, leaving an unconfirmed number of people feared dead and several others injured. The explosion, which resulted from a gas tanker bursting into flames, engulfed multiple vehicles and severely disrupted traffic on the busy route in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The incident took place during rush hour as commuters were returning from work, causing widespread panic as multiple explosions followed the initial fire outbreak. Emergency responders were deployed to the scene, providing rescue services and medical assistance to the injured. Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security agencies were also present, working to contain the situation and manage the aftermath.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion led to severe gridlock along the expressway, with many commuters abandoning their vehicles due to the intensity of the fire and resulting chaos. As of 8:30 p.m., traffic remained at a standstill in both directions, with vehicles unable to move.
