A husband and wife lost their lives when their small plane crashed in Georgia after losing contact with air traffic controllers shortly after takeoff, officials said.

James Hardee, 62, and Janet Hardee, a 59-year-old teacher, died when their single-engine Rockwell Commander went down around 11:40 p.m. Saturday near Covington Municipal Airport, about 40 miles from downtown Atlanta.

The plane took off just after 11 p.m. and immediately lost communication, the Covington Police Department reported. Officers later found the wreckage in the woods north of the runway, where both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

Janet Hardee was a beloved first-grade teacher at Putnam County Primary School. The school district mourned her passing, stating, “There are no words that can ease the sorrow and sadness we feel right now. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
