Germany arrests suspected ISIS supporters accused of planning terror attack on Swedish parliament
Two Afghan citizens were arrested in Germany near Gera, Thuringia, for allegedly planning a terrorist attack on Sweden's parliament. The Office of the German Federal Prosecutor revealed that one of the suspects is believed to be an ISIS member, while the other is suspected of supporting the group.
Germany's Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, confirmed the arrests, highlighting the ongoing threat of Islamist terrorism. The suspects, who received instructions from an ISIS branch in 2023, intended to retaliate against Quran burnings in Sweden and Scandinavia by targeting police officers in Stockholm.
They had made preparations for the attack, including attempting to acquire weapons and researching the local conditions.
Moreover, the detainees had collected approximately 2,000 Euros for ISIS before their arrest. The Afghan Embassy in Berlin expressed readiness to cooperate with authorities, condemning all forms of violence and terrorism.
The German federal prosecutor's office announced that the suspects would appear before the Federal Court of Justice for further legal proceedings, emphasizing Germany's vigilance in preventing terrorist activities. Faeser reiterated that Islamist terrorism remains a significant focus for security authorities due to its ongoing threat.
