Grandmother mauled to death by two 'unregistered XL Bullies' in Essex

The 68-year-old was visiting her 11-year-old grandson when she was attacked by two pets, later identified by her daughter as now-banned XL Bullies. Brave members of the public attempted to intervene to save her from the animals.

A 39-year-old man, with a familial relationship to Ms. Martin, has been arrested in connection with the incident. Officers from Essex Police responded to the scene on Hillman Avenue, Jaywick, at around 4 pm and found her seriously injured. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Essex Police indicated that detectives believe she was attacked by two dogs, both of which were euthanized. The breed of the dogs was not initially disclosed by the authorities.

However, Sonia Martin revealed that her mother, from Woodford Green in London, was attacked by XL Bullies and had previously expressed concerns about their dangerous nature to their owner.

Sonia Martin stated: "They were XL Bullies. There were eight of them in the house, six puppies and two adults. None of them were neutered or registered.

"The owner's exact words were, 'No one is going to tell me what to do with my own f*****g dogs.'"

"My mother had raised concerns about the dogs, regarding their breed and temperament. Her grandson was present in the house and rushed out, shouting for help.

"We would like to express our gratitude to all the neighbors who attempted to aid our mother."

The 39-year-old man from Jaywick was arrested on suspicion of dangerous dog offenses.

Chief Superintendent Glen Pavelin of Essex Police stated, "When six police officers entered the house, their priority was, as always, to ensure the safety of the community. Their unwavering bravery and professionalism led to the swift euthanasia of both dogs inside the house, eliminating any ongoing threat to the people of Essex."

"I also extend my gratitude to the local individuals who endeavored to assist Esther Martin. Your actions should be commended."

Pavelin added, "This incident is undoubtedly a shock to the community, and we understand their apprehensions. Our officers will be present in the area throughout today. If you possess any information, please approach them."

Experienced detectives are leading the investigation to determine precisely what transpired. Pavelin urged against speculation regarding the breed of the dogs involved, pending confirmation from experts.

Anyone with information or relevant footage is encouraged to contact the police using incident reference 723 of February 3.

Following a series of fatal attacks, XL Bullies were banned. Owners must obtain a certificate of exemption to legally retain their pets in England and Wales, subject to stringent conditions, including neutering, leashing, muzzling in public, and secure containment to prevent escape. Concerns persist regarding the potential existence of up to 10,000 unregistered XL Bullies following the implementation of the ban.
