Heartbreak as University of Kentucky dancer Kate Kaufling dies from rare form of bone cancer at just 20 - as her team says 'heaven has gained an angel'

A University of Kentucky dance team member tragically passed away at the young age of 20 due to a rare form of bone cancer, leaving the school community in mourning.

Kate Kaufling, a sophomore student from Louisville, Kentucky, lost her battle with osteosarcoma after fighting for more than nine months, according to school officials.

Kate, who was a member of the College of Nursing and joined the dance team in fall 2023 alongside her twin sister, Abbey, was remembered fondly by the university's dance team head coach, Dawn Walters. Walters described Kate as a joy to coach, with a smile that could brighten any room, and noted that she was beloved by her teammates.

Osteosarcoma, the aggressive form of bone cancer Kate battled, primarily affects children, teens, and young adults. Her diagnosis in June 2023 led to a GoFundMe campaign initiated by family friend Tina Ladegast, which raised over $90,000 to support Kate's treatment.

Despite the challenges of her illness, Kate maintained a positive attitude and sense of humor. In January, she celebrated completing her chemotherapy treatments by ringing the bell, marking the end of seven months of intense treatment and hospital stays. In an Instagram post, she expressed gratitude for the support of her friends and loved ones and reflected on the impact cancer had on her outlook on life.

Tragically, just 12 weeks after her celebration, Kate passed away, as announced by the University of Kentucky. Coach Walters praised Kate's bravery throughout her battle with osteosarcoma, emphasizing the inspiration her courage provides to others.

Executive Associate Athletics Director Sandy Bell also honored Kate's dedication to her academics, noting that even during her cancer treatments, Kate remained committed to her studies, setting a remarkable example for her teammates and leaving a lasting impact on those who knew her.
