Hedge fund magnate John Paulson accuses estranged wife of trying to 'rob' their daughters of $2billion of their inheritance
Hedge fund mogul John Paulson has accused his estranged wife of attempting to 'rob' their two daughters of their $2 billion inheritance amid their acrimonious divorce battle.
Paulson, 68, is facing a lawsuit from his ex-wife Jenny Zaharia, 55, who claims that during their 21-year marriage, he secretly stashed away millions in a 'secret trust.'
Worth $4.7 billion, Paulson quickly moved on with dietician Alina De Almeida shortly after splitting from Jenny. He recently made headlines for hosting a Trump fundraiser at his $110 million mansion, where his 35-year-old fiancée flaunted a massive new engagement ring.
Lawyers for Paulson disclosed that he offered to settle the case by 'removing future spouses and children as trust beneficiaries' and providing 'hundreds of millions of dollars,' an offer that was rejected by Jenny.
New documents obtained include a letter from JP Morgan addressed to Jenny about the trust, which Paulson's legal team claims proves her awareness of its existence.
Paulson's team estimates that if Jenny wins the case, she could slash $1 billion from the trust, effectively halving it, all to boost her divorce settlement.
Paulson vehemently denied any wrongdoing, stating, 'There was no fraud, no stealing, no siphoning, no hiding.' He emphasized that Jenny had been aware of the trusts since their inception, citing tax returns signed by her every year.
In response, Jenny's lawyer Robert Cohen challenged Paulson to formalize his settlement offer in writing, questioning why Paulson ignored their proposal to recreate the trusts without adverse tax consequences.
Jenny's legal team maintains she was unaware of the trusts and insists on a public trial for a fair resolution.
Amid the bitter divorce, Paulson's lawyers portray him as fighting to protect his daughters' future, expressing concerns that their inheritance could be diluted if Paulson has more children with his new fiancée.
Jenny argues that the trusts were used to evade Paulson's financial obligations in case of divorce. Two of the trusts notably benefit 'Paulson's legal wife,' potentially depriving Jenny of assets upon divorce.
The former couple's extensive real estate portfolio, including a lavish Palm Beach mansion, remains contested. Paulson's hosting of a Trump fundraiser adds to the high-profile nature of their dispute.
Paulson, renowned for his successful bet against the housing market in 2007, became a financial celebrity, although his hedge funds have since shrunk in size. His marriage to Jenny, described as 'a breath of fresh air' in a book about him, now faces a turbulent legal battle over their assets.
