In this aerial photo released by New Hampshire State Police, the remains of a helicopter that crashed and caught fire are seen on Saturday, June 1, 2024, Danbury, N.H. The pilot, who was not identified, survived the crash.

A helicopter crash in central New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon turned into a dramatic rescue as bystanders rushed to the scene, pulled the pilot from the burning wreckage, and rendered life-saving aid.

The Danbury police department reported that the aircraft, with only the pilot onboard, crashed into nearby woods, igniting a fire. Fortunately, the pilot managed to partially free themselves from the wreckage before bystanders heard the crash and immediately sprang into action.

Witnesses raced to the crash site, bravely removing the pilot from the burning helicopter. They provided crucial aid until emergency services arrived. Thanks to their swift and heroic efforts, the pilot, whose identity remains undisclosed, was rescued and transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center with "serious but non life-threatening injuries."

A statement from the New Hampshire State police revealed that the initial investigation suggests the pilot lost control near a landing site, leading to the crash in the wood line of a residential property. Despite the harrowing ordeal, the pilot remained conscious, breathing, and alert.

Authorities praised the quick thinking and bravery of the bystanders, emphasizing that their actions were instrumental in saving the pilot's life. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will conduct a thorough investigation into the crash.
