Hospice Patient Declared Dead Found Alive by Funeral Home Workers in Nebraska
A hospice patient in Nebraska, believed to be dead, was discovered alive by funeral home workers, according to police reports.
Constance Glantz, 74, was pronounced dead Monday morning at the Lincoln nursing home where she had been receiving hospice care. Her body was transferred to the Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home, as reported by ABC News.
However, just before noon, a funeral home worker noticed Glantz was breathing. The staff immediately began CPR and called authorities. Glantz was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she is currently being treated and remains alive, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
“It’s a very unusual case,” stated Lancaster County Chief Deputy Ben Houchin. “I’ve been doing this for 31 years, and nothing like this has ever happened before.”
The nursing home is not expected to face any charges. Glantz’s stay in hospice meant her death was anticipated, and there was nothing suspicious about her initial pronouncement. “We have not found any criminal intent by the nursing home, but the investigation is ongoing,” Houchin added.
