How to Safely Watch the AFCON Finals

Following the semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa at the ongoing African Cup of Nations competition, there were reports of several fatalities among viewers. Unfortunately, many of these deaths occurred as the South African team scored against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, during a critical moment when it appeared Nigeria might lose the match.

The stress induced by a high-stakes game can indeed trigger a heart attack in individuals who are at high risk. Cardiologists emphasize that becoming deeply invested in something, such as a major sporting event where one's favorite team is competing, can lead to hyper-focus and subsequent stress. This stress response often manifests in significant changes in blood pressure and heart rate, potentially culminating in a heart attack.

Research supports the notion that cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and sudden cardiac death, tend to increase surrounding high-stakes games. This intense emotional involvement experienced by fans can elicit a stress response akin to the body's "fight or flight" mode. Despite the absence of physical danger, the body reacts as if facing a threat, resulting in physiological changes such as increased heart rate and blood pressure.

The sudden surge of adrenaline, characteristic of stress, triggers the sympathetic nervous system, preparing the body for defense. While this response is a normal restress reaction, it can precipitate a heart attack in susceptible individuals. For fans already at heightened risk, such as those with underlying cardiovascular conditions, the stress of a game can exacerbate this risk significantly.

Factors such as being overweight, a sedentary lifestyle and high blood pressure are common among sports enthusiasts and further compound the risk during intense games. Additionally, the extreme weather conditions prevalent during many sporting events can exacerbate stress levels and increase the likelihood of adverse cardiovascular events.

Individuals with conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking habits, excessive alcohol consumption, or obesity are particularly vulnerable. Overindulgence in alcohol and fatty foods during such events can further escalate these risk factors, potentially leading to a major cardiac event.

To mitigate these risks, it is advisable to adopt preventive measures. These include avoiding overeating, especially salty junk food, and being prepared for the weather by dressing appropriately. It is also essential for individuals with cardiovascular disease to adhere to their prescribed medications and seek immediate medical attention if experiencing worrisome symptoms during a game.

Staying hydrated with water, particularly in hot weather, and moderating alcohol intake are also important precautions. Furthermore, remaining alert at live events to avoid injury is crucial for ensuring safety.

While the thrill of sports can be exhilarating, prioritizing health and safety is paramount, especially for those with existing cardiovascular conditions or risk factors. Recognizing the potential stressors associated with intense games and taking proactive steps to manage them can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for fans.
